Anne Hathaway quits Catholicism in support of gay community

Anne Hathaway, star of The Princess Diaries and more recently Bride Wars, reveals in the new issue of the British GQ that she and her family left the Catholic Church over its intolerant views on homosexuality.
According to the article, Anne wanted to be a nun when she grew up, but when her brother Michael later came out as gay, she changed her mind.

“The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out,” said Hathaway. “Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?”

Despite the organisation’s more liberal views, Hathaway says that the Episcopal church didn’t work for her either.

Anne Hathaway has been an outspoken advocate of gay rights in the past. Last January, she used a red carpet interview to question President Barack Obama’s decision to invite pastor Rick Warren to give his inaugural invocation. And in late 2008, the actress auctioned herself off for $12,000 to raise money for the Trevor Project, a crisis hotline for LGBT youth.
